Ninja Detective (series). Octavia Spencer. 2013. Ninja Detective, book 1: I really liked this children’s book by actor Octavia Butler after hearing an interview of her. Clever, funny, & the storyline held together. A fun book to read with a kid. No Biking in the House Without A Helmet. Melissa Fay Greene. 2011. No Biking In The House Without a Helmet: In some places, at its best, this book is really funny, but as a whole it is basically a collection of family stories. In other places, it drones on & verges on boring. A stronger editor could have cut out a couple of hours without giving up any of the good stuff. Not recommended. Neanderthal Seeks Human. Pretty good in terms of a steamy romance, but some of the plotting left something to be desired. The set up consistently the same: The dashing man seems to be doing something shady, misogynistic, or controlling, but actually, he’s a great catch. It got old. Good enough beach read, but only if you aren’t planning to pay close attention to it. Currently reading: Welcome to Temptation.
I still got lots of recommendations:
Catherine: Us Against You. Fredrik Bachman. So good. Virginia: Little Fires Everywhere (already read) and The Secrets We Keep. Us Against You has been recommended to me several times now, but I haven't gotten to it. I did read The Secrets We Keep in 2019, though. Less. Andrew Sean Greer. 2013. Less. A novel about an aging gay writer lamenting his life, I just couldn’t get into this at all. Written in a style too sophisticated for a light trashy novel, but not engaging enough to be considered literature. Skip it. Catherine: Didn't love this either. Agree to the skip it. Kiss The Girl. Melissa Brayden. 2014. Kiss the Girl. Lightweight, Queer romance at its best. Plot is light, characters are fun, lots of friendship goals. If this is your genre, recommend. *** Lisa: Do you think it's appropriate for a 15 year old? Me: They’ve probably read/seen more inappropriate stuff, but I doubt they’d find it interesting. How about Aristotle & Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe for that age bracket? Me: Yes. Lisa: We're always on the lookout for queer romances. Me: Have you read anything by Sabrina Bowen? I think they are really fun. Lisa: no, I haven't read her. I just Googled and wow! The books look more focused on sex than romance... Or is it just the covers? I think we (R and I) both prefer romance over sex. For reading purposes. Oh, geez, I'm just digger deeper and deeper holes for myself.. Me: I think they are more romance than sex. Try starting with Him & see what you think.😬😂🤪 Me: Four Funerals and Maybe a Wedding. Rhys Bowen. 2018. Four Funerals & Maybe a Wedding. The 13th book in The Royal Spyness series, this is the first one I didn’t really love. It felt like a rehash of two of the previous books, but without the tension & mystery of Darcy as a sexy subplot. Read the first 12, but not because you want to get to this one. Me: For those of you following along, no "book list" this year. I’m going to buy no more than two books at a time & read whatever is recommended to me next or whatever I hear about next when I finish or almost finish the book I am on. No suggestions or recommendations ahead of time. No list. No plan. So, I’m finishing up what I bought for winter break & then implementing the 2019 non-list book list. I’ll keep this post updated with what I end up reading.
Julie: I fully support this decision. I do hope you post reviews, since we "read" through the same literary medium as devoted members of Audible, PS: I was struggling with what to recommend for 2019.. I do have my wish list developed for 2019. |
