PictureIcelandic cafe decor. These are color coordinated books that look cool, but the books have been cut away about 3 inches from the spine so that they can be displayed. The bookshelves don't need to be full sized this way, but the books are unreadable.

Bonus #33. The Science of Sci-Fi

Not actually a book at all, this is a series of lectures about exactly what the title says.  It is actually pretty interesting and was just at my level of scientific understanding.  I enjoyed learning about what is possible given the science we have and what is just made up. It was a fun thought experiment.

Recommend, for the sci fi buffs.

While marginally interesting at the beginning one it was set up, the ending was so unsatisfying at to  nullify any investment that I had in the story.

No way to write this without a spoiler alert.  If you like stories that capitalize on the rare incidents in which women make up sexual assault or domestic violence allegations (like Gone Girl or Girl on the Train), then this is a book for you.  It has other twists, too, like the "psychologist" actually turns out to be a fellow psychiatric patient.  No thanks.

Extremely light, completely non-rapey, and just a sweet little book.  Sometimes, a white, het-normative romance with a rich man who ight sweep the elementary school teach off her feet is a fun diversion as long as you do not think very much about it.  This one falls into the category of ones that do not suck. Not recommended for obvious reasons, but also not not recommended.

Bonus #30: Dealing With The Devil

Tony Schwartz. 2020.
This book was a bit of a bait and switch, luring me in with the subtitle about Trump.  Written by the ghost writer of Trump's book, The Art of the Deal, who clearly feels a tremendous amount of guilt for his role in launching Trump into the public eye, this book is a mishmash of storylines that kind of bounce around.  It needed a heavy handed edit for sure.  Schwartz has done a lot of soul searching in his apparent attempt to make up for his role in Trump's success. This has included a lot of focus on the kind of new aged programs and advice that I just can't stand.  "Just focus on work-life balance, breathing techniques, and how your body responds to stress and you can live a better life" just isn't a substitute for living a better life, but I digress, which is, after all, what this book does over and over again.

Another fun, meaningless romance about a professional woman unsuccessfully trying not to fall in love with a sexy man.  I mean, it was light and entertaining, but when is the romance genre going to grow up and do something outside the same-old formula.  Don't get me wrong, I super appreciate a truly non-stalky, non-rapey trashy romance book. Until recently, such a thing did not exist.  But now that we have more of these, I want more diversity of characters, while still maintaining some trashy sex scenes and such.  Is that too much to ask?

Nothing redeeming here.  I couldn't even get into it enough to find it a distraction.  A week after finishing it, I can't even remember enough about it to write a meaningful review. I miss when the free audible books were good...

Bonus #27. Unspoken

Heartbreaking story about the loss of a child, but frankly the author did not make it easy to like him or to understand where he was coming from.  The complete exclusion of reference to the child's other parent was weird and his lack of meaningful introspection as to how his conduct was impacting other people was shocking.  Just because someone experiences a tragedy, doesn't mean what they have to say is interesting or compelling and this felt shallow.  Addiction issues aside, the overwhelming theme seemed to be narcissism.

An interesting take on the legacy of white supremacy in the American south, through the lens of music.  It is part of the aubidle music and words series and I think it is the best one of the ones I have listened to, but unless you are a fan of the music, I don't think it would be worth the time.

Since it was free with my Audible subscription, I tried another one of these and again just found that it did not resonate with me. I did think that maybe since I had never heard of this person that I might find it interesting, but this one had even less depth than some of the others.
