43. The Eyes of the Dragon

Stephen King. 1984.

There is nothing about this book that should have made me like it, except that I did.  With almost no women characters and a setting -- a castle with kings and princes and magicians and servants and peasants and secret passages and the head of a dead dragon slain by the king hanging on a wall -- that leaves something to be desired in terms of creativity and originality, I just don’t really understand what drew me in.  The last Steven King book I read, and maybe the only other Steven King book I have ever read, was Dolores Claiborne, one of my favorite books ever.  This wasn't as good as that one, but he is unquestionably a talented writer. From the very beginning I was drawn into the world and the characters. The blatant foreshadowing was clever and effective, serving as a taster and a spoiler at the same time.
